Jeopardy.com redesign

Jeopardy.com 2.0

In celebration of the 35th season of Jeopardy!, we had a lofty goal in mind when it came to our redesign of the show’s website: to make the best site for any game show on television and then fill it to the brim with content that gets fans excited, gets them engaged and gets them talking.

Insights

We started with what we know about our fans:

  1. Our fans love playing Jeopardy!

  2. They love Jeopardy! contestants.

Last year, “contestants” was our second most searched word.

  3. They love Jeopardy! stories

about unusual or dramatic gameplay moments, behind-the-scenes information, streaking contestants and, of course, Alex Trebek.

Action

How the site gives the fans what they are looking for:

J!6

Play More Jeopardy! Updated Daily!

J!6, a game that was created exclusively for the site, lets fans play one extra clue per category featured in that day’s show. It’s fun, addictive and educational. It also brings the most repeat visitors to the site, and traffic there has been on an upward trend since it launched.

Visitors

Over 50,000 Simultaneous Visitors

Our website is the first place any fan visits if they want to get on the show. Knowing this, we not only offer up tips and practice tests for fans who are interested in becoming contestants, but we also host the online tests. These online tests are live events that happen annually with upwards of 50,000 people taking the test simultaneously.

J!Effect

The Life-Changing Effect of Jeopardy!

From life-changing achievements to family traditions, Jeopardy! has been impacting lives for 35 years. We call this the J!Effect and created a section on the site to celebrate it. We interview fans at tapings, visit past contestants, and ask people to submit their stories via the site itself. We’ve heard fun tales, like a couple who met at the Teachers Tournament, fell in love and got married after competing on the show, and touching stories, like a musician who was struggling with homelessness and used Jeopardy! to take his mind off his troubles. We’ve also met up with many of our past champions (like Buzzy Cohen, Colby Burnett, and Ken Jennings) to check in with them and find out how winning big has changed their lives.

Contestant Zone

Contestant Stats Available In One Click

This new section makes our contestant content findable with one click. Fans can stay up to date on who’s playing (and winning!) every day and track stats on their favorite champs.

J!Buzz

Hundreds of Stories Keeping J! Fans In the Know

When Jeopardy! makes history with its first-ever tiebreaker or when Alex Trebek makes alterations to his facial hair, we want to be out in front with the story first. J!Buzz is our solution to that. It is an in-depth behind-the-scenes hub for fans and media outlets alike. We update it regularly, and we currently have more than 370 stories to keep Jeopardy! fans entertained and informed. So if you want the inside scoop on the contestant who was brought back because of a typo, if you long to see the behind-the-scenes moments from the show’s visit to the Galápagos Islands, or if you just want to see a 100-year-old Jeopardy! fan delight in the moment she got to meet her crush (Alex), then we’ve got you covered.

Tournaments

Tournaments, Champions and All-Stars

For Jeopardy! fans, some of the most exciting shows are the tournaments, so we gave them their own place to shine on the site. Plus, the show was planning its biggest tournament yet to celebrate the 35th season: the Jeopardy! All-Star Games. To create and maintain excitement for this unprecedented event, we added a robust section to the site with the latest information that would roll out in the months leading up to the airing of the tournament, including: custom videos highlighting each of the six team captains, a custom video recapping a Facebook Live draft event from the Jeopardy! stage hosted by Alex Trebek where the captains chose their teams in real time, and a fantasy league allowing fans to draft their own dream teams to follow throughout the tournament for a chance to win a Lindblad Expeditions grand prize.
